I just picked up a Jet 1442 from Stan (mrcook4570). I got it to start turning bowls. Can someone recommend a good book or DVD to start out with. I have been watching videos on YOUTUBE. A book or DVD that will start at chosing the wood clear to finishing the bowl. Thanks Rich H.

I have bought just about every bowl turning video ever made.
IMHO the best is Raffan's new woodturning video.

Also, I recommend Cindy Drozda's Finial Star. Cindy is focused on finial turning, but the content will teach you phenomenal technique, lots of considerations for design and excellent demos on sharpening.

Better yet, find an expert bowlturner and take 3-4 days of lessons. I know it's not cheap, but it is the best way to go up front -- before you build lots of bad habits.

I would recommend the Bill Grumbine DVD for starters..I second the Cindy Drozda also..She is doing an 8 hr demo for our club Sat after next.

Join a woodturning club for some free excellent instruction. Most clubs have extensive dvd libraries. I do hope you have an active club close.

Lyle Jamieson spent the weekend with me during the SouthWest Association of Turners' symposium back in mid-Oct. He spent several hours in my shop with me and left me his 2 set (4+ hours) dvd which I have watched and it is excellent. It covers turning a bowl from start to finish using only one tool and 4 cuts. Lyle does an excellent job instructing on the dvd.

The others mentioned are also excellent.

Do a good turn daily!

Thanks everyone for the info. There are no turners clubs close by. The closest is Erie which is over 2 hrs away. I talked to a member this summer and was invited to come to there meetings. Might have to check them out. Thanks Rich H.
