Hi.... this pooped up on Craigslist today (and as all you know, I have been scouring a 4 state area, to replace my HF lathe. The 2nd owner had it for 2 years, and had never used it. It is a Jet JWL1410. Originally, the poster was asking $275 (which included a Nova Chuck, New Pen Mandrel, a couple of Pen Kits, and a new 7mm drillbit). It ran fine, and seemed true, but... when we tried to change speeds, the belt would not go onto some of the pulleys... closer inspection showed that the belt was the incorrect one - I found the part online, and showed him... ate this point, I was getting ready to leave.... and then he asked if I would take it for $175 (he did not want to have to change the belt). I countered with $150, and am now the 3rd owner!
So.... How painful is a belt change? Would WoodCraft or Rockler have them in stock? (both are nearby). Is there a better aftermarket solution?

and most importantly (for my mental health) - was this a good deal?

Thanks, Guys, for all the help so far -
Richard

I'd say you got a terrific deal, all that lathe, chuck, and other bits for $150? Score.

I don't understand how the belt can fit on some pulleys but not all. As one wheel increases in diameter, its partner shrinks -- so the total distance around the two pulleys remains almost constant across the range of 5 speeds.

Anyway, you can easily find the correct replacement belt -- and find a generic equivalent from any one of several online vendors. (I bought a replacement drive belt for my Nova 1624 lathe from a vendor on Amazon for about 1/3rd the 'official' price.)

Sounds like you got a Great deal. I wonder if the headstock spindle pulley is bent? As one other poster has mentioned if it fits one diameter, it should fit all of them. Might want to examine each step of the pulley (maybe the drive pulley as well). If that's the case, replacing the belt won't cure it, you'll need to replace the pulley. If the pulleys are okay, then you'll still need to at least partially remove the spindle so you can take the old belt off and put the old one on. If the Spindle pulley is indeed bent, you'll have to order a new one from Jet and take the spindle out completely and take the old one off and slide the new one back into the headstock and put the replacement pulley on the spindle as you put it back into the headstock. Will have to watch for the flat or dimple for the set screw on the pulley to match up with the spindle. If it's just the belt, you can also get one (probably cheaper) from places like Grainger. They have a ton of belts. Take the old one in and they'll go in the back and bring you out a new one and your wallet will like it. Another way to go is "link belt" from Woodcraft. Expensive but makes changing easy and as the belt wears, you can take out a link or two and use the belt. Good Luck!

The Jet 1014 is a great little lathe. Should do you well. It IS, however a beast when it comes to changing the belt. Just not much room up in the head for "fat fingers":)
