Why do bottle stopper blanks come 3" long? If you use the whole blank you get a very top heavy stopper. Also the display cases I got from CSUSA will only handle a 1 1/2" wood top. Do you people cut the blanks in 1/2 or what?
I cut a lot of the stoppers to 3-1/2 inches plus, sometimes as long as 5 inches....doesn't mean that the end user is required to make a stopper that long.
Could always be cut in half and the blank used as two stoppers?
And the lighter types of wood may not be as heavy as thought if the taper on the top is long and slender(also gives the display some height)?
I've seen many bottle stoppers that require a long blank. Would you rather have a long blank where you need to remove extra material or a blank that is to short for the design you want?
Also, if you make a lot of bottle stoppers consider buying longer pieces and cutting them to length. I often buy ones that are 12" long and cut what I want. It's also usually cheaper.
I just buy bigger bottles of wine! I've seriously never thought about it, I guess because I make most my stoppers from wood scraps. Also I recess the stopper part into the stopper so only the wood shows and it fits over the bottle opening. Most my stoppers are 2 1/2" to 3" tall.
Sometimes I use a longer blank because it allows me the flexibility of making a mistake. Also allows me part off whatever I don't want on top. All that is really necessary is 2" IMO.
