At my age, I'm easily confused. Anyway, I got two bottle stopper kits from Woodcraft. Here is the confusing part: directions say to drill an 11/32 hole 9/16 inch deep. Then the blank is to be mounted and secured to the mandrel where the blank seats tightly against the shoulder of the mandrel. However, the length of the tap (3/8-16) is 3/4 inch long. In order to seat against the shoulder of the mandrel, the hole has to be a minimum of 3/4 inch! Am I reading this correctly? These are my first and want to display them with my pens.

I've always had better luck using the threaded knurls that mount inside the blank. Stronger hold on the mandrel also.

I'm confused. Can you reference the bottle stoppers you are trying to make? There are different styles and the instructions vary on some of them.
What are you talking about "the tap"? Are you referring to the threaded post on the bottle stopper?
The ID threads on the inserts are right handed. The outer threads are also right handed although they are very coarse threads.
The inserts @bsshog40 has are supposed to be press fitted into the hole and then the ID threads are right handed.

Tap= threaded part on mandrel with notch to cut threads and clear debris.
The inserts I have used in the past thread into wood left handed so they don't back out when removing a RH screw or bolt. I don't anticipate buying press fits from Amazon in the near future although I do have a shopping list if I decide to go thtt route.
Bottle stoppers are from Woodcraft, https://www.woodcraft.com/products/woodriver-silicone-bottle-stopper-kit-black.
Does the lip on the spacer got against the rubber or the turning?

I am assuming you are making type "A" bottle stopper. The length of the thread on the mandrel should only be 1/2" (or less) long. The thread on the type "B" mandrel might be 3/4" long. The type "B" (1/4" diameter thread) needs to be longer for support.
Are you sure you are using the correct turning mandrel? The threaded stem on the Type "A" stopper is rather short.
