The ends are closed and one end has acrylic the other wood to cover those bases. Several people suggested the cap is missing. A cap is not a problem its choosing the material. This is the first piece I grabbed this morning and a cap appeared.

I really like the pen. I am partial to closed end pens and I think this is really well done. But, that said, I can't for the life of me figure out why you need a cap on a retractable ball point. I think it distracts from the beauty of the pen.
