Boobies

Seen some of these at the zoo today. They are kind of odd looking... a cross between a seagull and a penguin with blue feet.
Researching them explains their name as a dumb bird or a "dunce". They were often eaten by sailors and shipwrecked crews because they would land on the ships and were easily captured.

I know...... some of you were hoping for something different.

I've been to Half Moon Cay in Belize where 90% of the Red Footed Boobies nest. The baby boobies look mighty ugly, sort of grey skin with tufts of white fuzz. You can climb an observation tower and be nest level, quite close to several nests.

When I was stationed at Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station (Oahu, Hawaii) back in the late seventies, there was a large Red Footed Booby nesting area at the Ulupa'u Crater, which just happened to be our firing range! They are not known for their intelligence!!!!
