Just a question I have a member on my feacebook page selling Honduran Rosewood Burl for $100.00 a blank which to me seems extreme no matter how pretty the wood is. I am just looking for comments and thoughts.
Thanks

I bought 4 large HRB "pen Blanks" off Ebay 5+ years ago. They are 3/4" square and approx 7" long. I know I paid upwards or $60+ each for them then. These are dark and dense and actually hard to see the grain due to their denseness.
HRB is not a replaceable resource at this time and supply and demand definitely comes into play with this wood.

Given that CSUSA has exhibition grade Honduras rosewood burl blanks on sale for $15 right now, I wouldn't do it.

I assume you're referring to the guy with the initials E.R.? He is going bonkers on all the pricing he is listing. In fairness though, like someone else indicated, it's the cocobolo he's charging $100/blank on. The HRB I saw he has listed for $30/each.

The unfortunate thing about the cocobolo is that it will eventually turn dark brown/black and that vibrant red/orange will be gone. Not even *close* to worth it (in my opinion), regardless of how rare it is.

Regarding the CUSA listing above for HRB, That looks like an attractive price, but I would be soooo nervous to buy sight unseen burl. It's too bad they don't post photos of what they consider "exhibition grade".

I'm one of the lucky ones; their warehouse and storefront are 10 minutes from my house. I ought to go over and hand select a few of those HRB blanks, they are absolutely gorgeous.

I also assumed that this was one of E.R.'s listings. The cocobolo he is asking $100/blank for is burl, which is extremely rare and they are oversized blanks, probably 7/8" x 7/8" x 6 1/4", so if you are making sleeved kitless pens, they are long enough.

What you are willing to pay and how much you would charge for a pen made with this is a very personal choice.

I just swung by CSUSA and asked them to bring up a few of the grade AAA HRB blanks for me to pick one out. This stuff looks just as good in person as it does on the website, all 4 blanks I looked at were stunning. I bought my favorite one, now I just need to decide on a pen worthy of such a blank :D Feels like an absolute steal to get a blank this beautiful for $15. And there are at least 3 more just as good in the warehouse, can't speak firsthand about the rest haha.

How large are the blanks and are they burl or straight grain? I did a quick check on eBay and prices range from $350.00 for exhibition grade Honduran Rosewood Burl (5.25" X 5.55" X 2.35") to $23.00 for a straight grain piece (1" X 1.80" X 6.33"). Exhibition grade Honduran Rosewood is worth the price if you're using it for inlay on custom furniture, or making very high end fountain pens with it. I've been collecting it over the years and pick it up when the price is good. For me, that would be between $35.00 to $100.00, depending on the figure and how large the piece is. I've collected a pretty nice selection in my stash by doing that. ....Just my .02¢ worth

I also noticed that Steve Davis (a member of IAP) has a nice selection of Honduran Rosewood pen blanks for sale and a very good price. Here's the link:
