Yesterday I got an e-mail from Ebay. Being suspicious of any e-mail from any business I deleted it without opening. I then went to Ebay to log into my account.
My password had been deleted and I was blocked. I had to go through the entire routine of answering security questions and re-registering with a new password.
Once in I was sent a message that someone had hacked my password and made purchases with my credit card.
Somehow, Ebay discovered this and stopped the transaction and made sure no charges were put on my credit card.
They then notified me.
Ebay is a business. The company does a good job. Just because they are a big business does not make them bad. Even if some of the political views of management do not agree with mine, the company is a great example of success in the American free enterprise system.

You did exactly the correct thing! I agree that Ebay has a good business model.
You also want to run a full security scan of your computer and any computer you may have used recently. You may have a key-logger or other malware.

I try never to allow any business to store my credit card info. If they do, I send them my "Fiduciary Responsibility Agreement". It states that if they store information on their system and it is compromised, they are financially responsible, including "incidental and consequential" costs. The only alternative is to delete the credit card information.

I use Paypal, and also have it linked to a bank account separate from my main account. My credit union sends me an email every time my credit card is used.
Paypal is instructed to require any transaction to be manually entered. No-one may automatically enter transactions on my behalf.

I do not put SSN, Drivers license, or Medical insurance info on any forms. No-one scans my drivers license.

If anyone did charge items on your card, you can expect nasty letters from the people who lost money.

To help fraud with credit cards I have 3.

1 I use for online purchases.
2 The second is for restaurants
3 the third is for anything else.

If there is a compromise of one of the cards I can identify what company last used what card.

the police love it.
