Here it goes for a Newbie. This isn't easy learning to turn pens and then taking a picture of it. Been watching all of this for awhile and had to try it.

Well done and welcome to the IAP!

Don't take it wrong, just my opinion. I would like the grain orientation to be in the same direction on both halves. But that is just me.
 
Wow. I like the way the strips are in the pic. It brings them out more and they really get noticed. You just need to carve a tiger's head on the end. [:)]

I am one of those flatwood guys that have begun to enjoy this.
Sorry for no wood idenification.
That is Bocote cut on a 30 degree bias.
