Has anyone bought a Churchill from them recently? In their text for this sale, they note that the pen kit is all metal, except for the delrin centre threads. I bought mine a few years ago, and the black parts were plastic. Have they made any changes, or would these kits be the same as the ones I got earlier? I like them, but they're light and didn't always feel as good as other kits.

Katya,

I don't know about the current Berea Churchill model however, another IAP member sells the Daycom version of the Churchill and it is all metal (except the delrin centre threads). It is a nice balanced pen. Much nicer then the all plastic version. I use one as my daily writer.

That was copied from the Berea site, not MY math, I didn't go to school in OHIO!

FYI
Got an email from Berea, Churchill special on gold or chrome rollerball....
Retail price-$13.75 Now-$7.70 each. That's 56% of the retail price!!

Small arithmetic error there --- it's 44% off...still a good deal.Edit: Sorry I read "of the retail price" as "off the retail price" ..... original arithmetic is correct.

:smile:Well most people would advertise that as 44% off the retail price rather than 56% of the retail price --- maybe they did go to school in Ohio.

Berea updated all their Churchill couplers at least a year ago.

They are now all metal.

Except the 5 I recieved today,The front sections are plastic.I plan to return the kits after I contact them. The rest of the parts are metal though.

Call them first!!! They were delivering the extra parts separately for a LONG time---someone may have forgotten to put them in your order!!

I tried calling them but it must have been after hours so I will give them a call in the morning.I like the looks of the set and I hope you are right about the extra parts.

My first post - I'm returning to pen making after a 5 year absence........

I purchased several Churchill kits from the Berea sale - the gold and the sterling silver plated Rollerballs. The black final and receiver (the two ends) are both metal. The major plastic pieces are the black center band and the black nib holder. ( I call it the nib holder for lack of a better name since it is a rollerball rather tha a fountain pen - the names of the parts I have used are from the online Berea Churchill instructions.)

So is this the "updated" kit?

One other question since much has changed in the 5 years I wasn't paying attention. Someone above referred to the Dayacom version of the Churchill. Is the Berea version made by a different manufacturer?

Thanks for any help.........

Charlie

I talked to them today and yes that is the updated kit.

The plastic nib holder is a deal breaker for me.They were very understanding about it and will refund my purchase when I get the kits back to them.

I hope they update the information on that style to reflect that the front section and the centerband are not metal but everything else is to avoid confusion like I had.

Still a good looking kit though.

This is the update. They were plastic and COULD be broken, especially if carried in the "jeans pocket" by guys.

Several pen manufacturers are using the names that were introduced by Berea. This does not mean it is the same pen!!! Sierra, Churchill and Sedona are among the names I have seen copied by others.

Thanks for any help.........

See answers above!

I don't see a problem with the plastic parts. Many expensive pens from some of the major manufacturers have plastic parts. I've never had a customer complain of plastic parts nor have I had any pens returned due to breakage. Bic pens are for carrying in jeans pockets. The Churchill and El Grande are nice looking pens, have a nice size, are comfortable to use and I sell a lot of them. I only wish pens like the jr series, the Baron and others had a larger section which would make them more comfortable for large hands to hold and use. At the price they were selling I was more than happy to get them at that price.
Do a good turn daily!

Hmmmm

I tried and backed off offering a similar kit (not using the same name) because of plastic parts - nice looking pens and offered in the same finishes gold and silver (but they didn't say Sterling). I think in this instance, since they are being purchased from Berea I strongly suspect they are Berea kits.

I think I have read an their site that Berea claims to manufacture all of their own kits so while Dayacom might produce a kit with the same name I don't think it would necessarily the same kit.
