I am in the process of researching what lathe and equipment I need to get. There are a lot of opinions/reviews out there.... I have a basic workshop that I mostly do scroll work in. Plan on ordering by the end of the month. I found a wood store in Pensacola but they are only open during the week and I of course work during the week. I have been leaning towards the Turncrafter Commander 12" VS because of the features and price.

I will post my first pen when I complete it - no matter how it looks - have to proud of your first born...

Welcome to the group! Be sure you read the reviews section on this site, it may help in determining which lathe will best suit your needs. I personally would not buy that lathe for that price, but would rather spend the extra money to get quality! Just my .02 worth

Welcome. I am a fellow woodturner in Pensacola. We have a fairly active woodturning club-Artistic Woodturners . The monthly meeting is the third Saturday each month and happens to be this Saturday August 20. Peeples Exotic is a good place for some interesting wood. He operates from his house and has weekend hours. Depending on your budget and future wants/needs I have found the new Delta mini/midi to be a nice lathe as are the smaller Jets.

Thanks for the welcome. I am also looking at the delta 46-460 but with a budget of 700-800 to get started with for the lathe and any other supplies I need to turn with I am limited. I have the basic power tools - table drill press, table saw, bench sander, compound miter, scroll saw, ... I am also building the pressure/vacuum pot.

I'd buy the Delta and save money elsewhere. Every turner I know that has bought the TurnCrafter has encountered "issues" (more than one). The Delta is rock solid.

I bought a Jet 1014 VSI, and many thousands of pens later, It still performs well. BUT, when it comes time to make the Jet a dedicated drilling station, I will buy the Delta.

If you shop hard (usually Amazon with free shipping), you can find either the Jet or Delta well below retail.

If the Jet and Delta are still out of the price range, look closely at the Ricon. It has lots of features, is built rock solid and is in the price range (less on sale) than the TurnCrafter.

Welcome Aaron!
I have the Delta and it is a joy to use! I have to agree that if you stick to it, the Jet or Rikon, you will be much happier in the long run.
Be sure to ask lots of questions here .... we've made all the mistakes ... maybe we can help you avoid some of them!
