No pens (yet). I'm waiting for the rest of my strobe gear to get here. Radio trigger rig and adapter to put shoe flashes on my stands.

This was strictly with the on camera flash and one of those cheap little "booster" slaves. All with the 18-135 kit lens.

I can't wait until I get the rest of my gear and start really playing.:biggrin::biggrin:

Looks good from here! Its my favorite time of the day, going to the mailbox and getting that package! The LOML gets so jealous, she says I must get a package everyday, that its ridiculous! LMAO.

Those strobes are going to be powerful and difficult to capture small macro items. It'll be like taking a photograph of the sun. I have some and they work great for taking pictures of people and large artwork, but it's a lot of set up time getting the lights to the proper distance and matching the timing on your camera. My strobes are only 150 watt and if you use even just one to take a picture of a pen, you have to set that strobe back about 30 ft away and point it straight up to the ceiling or the picture will be nothing but total white light.

Bouncing off the ceiling is what I do now.

As for overpowering strobes, are you talking about the little slave? That's only being used until my radio triggers get here.

Since getting this D80 I've been pulling out the things I haven't used in years. I even offered this Magic Silo for sale at one point here!

Stuck my little slave inside and used it as a softbox. Still need to light up the dark side, but I'm having fun playing!

HERESY!!! Never too much light, not possible. no way, no how... but seriously... a lot of light is needed for macro work so you can keep your aperture high and your ISO low (shutter speed is relatively irrelevant with strobes). Depth of field is proportional to the distance from your subject, so when you're in macro range, you need to use a high aperture to keep some depth of field (assuming you want it...) the ring is a great example of that. A bucket load of more light, and you MAY be able to get the whole ring in focus, maybe not, depending on your lens and working distance.
