Well, it's been an eventful year. I graduated from college (2nd time), quit my job, moved to Chesapeake, VA and been working on this tree.

We had to have this Oak tree taken down. There was quite a bit of rotting wood in it, but you can see that I'll probably have enough to play with.

The middle part of the stack is all quarter-sawn.

The awning is only temporary. We're supposed to get a few days of rain here. (A lot better than the sub-zero temps back in Montana, right Gerry?) Anyway, I'm going to build a lean-to for this wood and I'll be able to stack the firewood I got from the tree as well.

Oh, I'm 6'4" btw...

Up to this point we have had a clean forum language wise , I for one wish we would go back to expressing ourself with more intellegence. Drop the foul language.
 
It sure seems like there are a lot of turners in this neck of the woods. I'm looking forward to meeting a lot of you.

My big problem right now is having a place to work with the wood. I need a shop. Will have to work on that. I've got a 2 car garage stuffed full of boxes AND we needed a storage unit as well.

I brought a heavy bar, about 6 feet tall, with me from Montana. I didn't know when it might come in handy. I used this bar as a youngster prying boulders out of the ground on the farm. Natural erosion would uncover rocks which had to be picked so the combines wouldn't scoop them up and cause a lot of damage. Sometimes, there would be a lot of rock below the surface. We used this bar to lever them up. Then two or 3 of us would attempt to hoist it into the truck, or at least roll it to the edge of the field.

Using a small log for leverage, I was able to roll and turn these. Not easily of course. The sawyer had a contraption that had a heavy duty handle with a hook on a pivot. I think he called it a log roller. That was WAAYYY easier than using the bar.
