Hello all,

Unfortunately my spanner wrench for my Beall Collet Chuck system has ran away (Read - someone stole it). Anyone have a good source for another?

Cheers,

James: You might try a small strap wrench. They are available from places like Harbor Freight and Northern Tool for just a couple of bucks and they won't beat up your chuck like Vice-Grips or Channel-Locks.

For folks who have a strong grip, I've always wondered if you could put a wrap or two of that rubber electrical tape (not the vinyl stuff) around the chuck and the collar and get a good enough purchase to tighten and loosen the thing by hand??

PSI has designed a collet chuck that they claim you can operate without a wrench. They have knurled both the collar and the chuck body.

This may be too obvious but, Beall?
Beall does sell them. I need to call them and see what size I need as there are two available and can't remember what measurement mine would be:

Spanner Set 1 (3/4"-16 and 1"-8)
Spanner Set 2 (1-1/4", 1-1/2" and 33mm)

As for the strap wrench or by hand, this thing really locks itself onto the headstock when turning. You darn near have to beat it to get it off with the wrench at times.

Thanks

James: If you haven't already done so, try cutting a washer out of the top of a butter tub or a Cool-Whip container and slip it over the nose of the HS spindle so it will be between the chuck and the shoulder on the spindle. Sometimes this helps.

I bought a Beall chuck shortly before PSI announced their knurled "wrenchless" chuck. I had a short spate of buyer's remorse, and considered wrapping grip tape around the chuck. After a while, though, I found that I occasionally needed the leverage the wrenches provide. Over time, I've gotten quick at using them and I now believe that Beall was the right way to go.

I do keep an eagle-eye on the wrenches though.

Regards,
Eric

Another "solution" is a washer over the spindle, made from quarter inch plywood. It never tightens "rock solid" even if you are getting LOTS of catches.

Of course, if you stop getting CATCHES...............????????:D:D

He he he. I would be arresting my own boy! This new 3 acre place we have has tons of holes to dig in with Daddy's tools. :D

Anyway, I just called Beall. Nice folks. They set me up with what I needed. The set now comes with two wrenches for anyone that is interested. When I bought my chuck, it only came with one. Now they are sold with two and replacements are only $7.25 for the new set. The shipping sucks at almost 10 bucks, but that's life.

Thanks all...

Sounds bad, Fangar.

Your youngun' has taken to theft and property destruction!!!
(When I was young, we called that "play")

Rescue him quickly!!! Set him in front of a computer so his muscles can atrophy!!! In a few years, he'll be fine (learning from "Grand Theft Auto 4" -- now THERE'S some VALUABLE life lessons in that thar' software).

When your young man leaves home, you will find your "tool replacement budget" is really reduced. You'll also find, you miss his company!!

New spanner wrench, no complaints = good dad, Fangar!!!:D:D:D

Sounds like Dad should have "Metal Detector" at the top of his Christmas list. [:0]

All good points. Metal detector would be a nice have anyway. Unfortunately right now my landscaping costs have placed us into the Top Ramen and hot dog category.

As for the boy, he just got some Cap guns. That is about as close as he will get to "Grand Theft Auto". I hate those games.

After all, his Daddy is a "Bank Robber".

:D
