Where is the best place to get the chuck? I saw Beall had the chuck for $72.99 and the collets were $19.99. Since I need a 5/16" I figured I would buy individual collets as I need since the set does not come with a 5/16" Any better place?

Tommy,
Thanks for that link. After seeing that I got a little giddy and did a search for er32 and found the same guy has a 18 peice set.
It has the 5/32 7/32 9/32 11/32 15/32 19/32 23/32.
My question is for doing closed ends will I need any of these sizes? I can toss the taper chuck that comes in the set. But if the other sizes do me no good then why spend an extra $50.

Mike

I haven't done a closed end pen yet. But I have used 2 or 3 sizes for different things other than the ones used for the two mandrel sizes. I have had no need for a smaller breakdown than 1/16 between collets. However, I have only been turning for about 6 months, so I may need it and not know it yet...[:D]

Mike,
You only need a few of the collets for doing closed end pens, depending
on the OD of each pin chuck or closed end pen mandrel. But, the extra
collets have been one of my best tool purchases. The selection of
collets is excellent for holding various plastic pen pen parts for
modifying those parts. I have used almost every collet in the 18 pc set for holding something...and they hold without marring the surface.
If I could only keep two tools in my shop (other than gouges, skews, drill bits) one would be the Beall collet chuck set and the other
would be my drill doctor. I purchased my set from the 800watt on ebay.
He was slow, did not answer emails but the set arrived about 3 weeks after I ordered.

I actually ordered this set and advertised the R8 chuck and sold it
here on IAP for $15 if I remember correctly.

OK now I have even a bigger delima.
Order the chuck from beall $79.00 + $7.75 shipping
Order the 18 piece set for 89.99 + $19.99 shipping

or

Order the Beall set for $112 = $11.95 shipping (today only)
then order collets as I need them from someplace like harbour freight. I could really use some help here folks. and if I remember right it is the 1x8 for the jet mini 1014vs correct?

I don't think HF has them, but they may. The Little Machine Shop has them and you can get them as you need them for about $8-12.
Check these: Enco http://www.use-enco.com
MSC http://www1.mscdirect.com
Macmaster-Carr http://www1.mscdirect.com

I know how you feel about puchasing and making our $$$ do as much as they can in the shop. Good luck on your decision.

If you are going to toss the chuck order the set with the MT3 taper and I will gladly pay you $15.00 plus shipping for it. I need an extra one or two[:)]

Go back to e-Bay and look here... http://business.listings.ebay.com/Workholding_Collets_W0QQfclZ3QQfromZR11QQsacatZ25294QQsocmdZListingItemList

There are several pages of collets to choose from. I would never buy from an e-Bay vendor that does not answer e-mails. Be sure and watch out for return policies just in case. [:D]

Thanks Fred I had already been searching collets on eBay and other places. 800watt is just to big to provide good service in my book. I am sure he gets a bunch of email but when he does not respond, then he does not get my money.

OK I went with the Hartville deal. $112 for the Beall set was too good to pass on. I plan on just buying the extra collets here and there until I have the whole set.

Thanks for everyones input as it really helped.

I missed out on the Hartville Tools sale and agonized over what to do for awhile, I finally decided to take a chance and order the 11pc collet set from 800 watt and it arrived in 10 days and that was with a holiday weekend thrown in, just luck or what? I have the chuck on its way from Beall for $79 so I'm at $129 plus shipping. If I had gottten in on the Hartville sale for $112 and had to put $20 out for a 5/16 collet which I have to have I would still be right close to where I am now and it sure beats $159 for a 5pc set that most are asking.[:D]

I just got a new PSI catalog yesterday, and on the inside back cover (p.79) they proudly display their new collet chuck, which comes complete with 5 collets (but no 5/16") and a 1"x8TPI spindle adaptor (don't know what pattern is on the chuck before adapter is installed). The price is $89.95, which is pretty darned attractive IF the collets are ER-32.

ordered my Beal chuck from Packard Woodworks $79.00 + shipping.

I had no problems with 800 Watt, Very FAST service:

Wish he had just the collet set above when I ordered, anyone need a #3 MORSE TAPER Collet chuck?
