Hi there. Has any one figured how to adapt the Beall 3 wheel buffing system mandrel to the Shopsmith? Beall has a #2MT on the head stock end and a normal indent on the shaft for a live center. Alas, Shopsmith does not accomodate the #2MT. I think I can make a "waste wood adapter" to attach toa face plate that has been drilled to fit the #2MT. Any ideas/suggestions? It really works good in my Jet Mini, but I don't want to keep changing from lathe to lathe.
thanx, Jim

First off Jim ----Welcome to IAP----hope you have some fun here and maybe even pick up a trick or two.
To get the best answer to your question----Beall has a web site and they respond to emails fast----they would know ---

Hi there gang. Just received an email from Beall. Sorry, no cigar! The 3 wheel buffer system will not work, but the single system wone will work. Drat, I have the 3 wheel system. Not to worry, as I have dreamed up my own version of an adapter for the Shopsmith using the 3 wheel buffer system. I will let you all know how it works, soon. Stand by for further updates on this matter. Again, I do appreciate all of the input so far. Keep it coming! Jim

Jim,
I'm curious why the Beall won't work??
You could always make your own set up. There are posts here on IAP about making one.

I used 3/4" all-thread and I bought 3 wheels from Beall. It chucks into my jacobs chuck. A friend machined the all-thread down a bit to fit. I sandwiched the wheels between fender washers and used PVC pipe to cover the threads between the wheels.

Depending on the lathe you have, will determine how many wheels you can add (basically the distance from headstock to tailstock) Some have put all three on a jet mini. I chose to only put two on mine and I kept the carnuba wheel on the shaft it came with.

In fact, I have a set of three wheels and buffing compounds I won at our turning club Christmas Party. If you or anyone is interested, contact me...

Hi Bob, Another great idea! I'll have to go out and see what is available in my area and possibly give it a try. Really makes one want to think more before calling it quits or accepting a no answer. Thanx, Jim

I could have sworn there are adapters available that will go from one MT to another size MT. With the buffing system, you don't need it to be accurate to the thousandth. I think I've seen these adapters for less than $15.

I do not believe shopsmiths have MT.

Man, I sure hope they do. I learned how to turn pens on a SS.[B)] MarkV IIRC.
