I purchased a Beall buffing set up to use on my Jet 1014 lathe, but the shaft is too long. With my shortest live center in the lathe, the tail stock can't be clamped down.

I VERY BRIEFLY thought of using a dead center in the tail stock;; bad idea!

Has anyone else had this problem?:confused:

How did you resolve the situation?:confused:

I've just about decided to shorten the shaft and re-drill the shaft for the center. I have a metal lathe and I'm DANGEROUS with it!

If you use the original center that came with the lathe it should work. The tail stock does hang off of the lathe, but it should clamp down. Most other centers stick out too far.

Yep,

you need the center that came with the lathe. Also, that special clamp lock that a member was selling some time ago really helps because even with the stock center the tailstock hangs far off the bed. I solved my problem with a bed extension.

I only bought the wheels and I built my own buffing system out of 3/4" all thread and have two wheels on the shaft. Tripoli and White Diamond. I then use the bolt that came with the wheels to mount the Carnuba wheel into my jacob's chuck. It worked so well on my 1014, that I didn't change anything when I went to a 1220.
