Basket weave rim plate

Basket weave rim detailed on a Butternut Plate. This is my first attempt to use my new NSK Presto high speed carver on a turning. Finish is just oil, I'll probably embrace my inner magpie and put on some rubbing varnish and make it shiny.

I love work like this. As regards finishing it, don't make it shiny, it will detract from the piercing you have done. Very nice piece all the same

I drew the pattern using the index on my lathe and a compass, then freehand cut within the lines

Very well done! I love the carving work on the turning.

Regarding the shine - you can always add several more coats of oil (assuming that you are talking about a drying oil and not mineral oil) until the piece is completely saturated. Then wait a couple of weeks and then either power buff or hand rub to the desired sheen. Oil can produce the full range from matte to semi-gloss, which is why it is my finish of choice on larger turnings.

I really like this piece. The grain of the wood is highlighted by the carving and if you make the finish glossy it will detract from the grain and the carving.

Thanks all, I guess I'll just keep applying more coats of oil until it stops absorbing it like a sponge. I am using Bush Oil which is a Linseed based oil finish that does not get all that glossy.
