Well the 2012 Bash is history and so is all of Mike's Polls. I first like to say and it has been said before by many here, Thanks once again for sponsoring the event and that with each event like this, the effort from the volunteers goes hidden in a way. It takes so much planning and work to put on something like this starting from the top with Jeff to all the people who give of their time and efforts. Without them we do not have what we just witnessed. So a huge THANKS

Now I would like to make a few comments. I put this topic here because I think more people read this forum than they do Management forums. Maybe because they do not think it applies to the everyday runnings of this site. Not sure but that maybe a good idea for a new Poll for MIke:smile: I have been very busy the past months with my job and basically forgot about all the polls that were posted. Well things have slowed down a bit for me so I was able to get somewhat caught up on things and one was reading the results of the polls.

After reading them, some were abit surprising and some were basically they way I thought they would end up. Hopefully the polls will help in the planning of next years event. I will accept whatever the committee chooses to do but still go on record saying that all judging should be left to the membership and leave out the judges unless some ruling needs to be had. Anyway whatever happens I support. But what bothered me the most and i still can not figure out why is such low turnout for the voting. Not only for the polls and I know some people think they are a waste of time but also the contests. Sometimes I get caught up in numbers things and I think that at times numbers can tell a huge story.

This site is one of the best on the net and is the best at what it stands for hands down. It is well run and well received. Just look at the new membership joining everyday. But here is where the rub is. 14,000 members and counting but we can only get 100 to 200 or so members to vote or take the time to vote. The Bash has become part of this site for many years and it has taken on new life each year and hopefully it grows better and better.

People talked about the BANTER lacking this year. Everyone tried to figure out why. I mentioned in one of the posts that I thought it was because of the turnover in membership. We lost alot of the more colorful people we had here and being so many new members they felt out of place and did not know what to expect.

People talked about not being good enough to enter contests and things were set up to try to remedy this. Right after the Bash polls were taken to see if still things can be changed and the pulse of the membership was being taken. But as it turns out just a few hundred cared enough to answer the polls or even vote in the contests so this now becomes the percentage that is answering for the 14,000 members. I feel disappointed. Not of the results but of the membership.

Maybe I am reaching for something that is not there. But the Bash happens every year around the same time so it comes as no surprise. Enter a contest or not is your choice. But for the good of the site participate in the voting and commeradery happening at this time. Like i said at the beginning of this soapbox speach, time and effort by many have been put forward to bring this event and the very very very least we can do is show support by voting or voicing some opinion.

Next year is a Milestone for the Bash so hopefully Mike and the crew will have great things planned for us which I am sure they do. I believe the committee is always looking for ideas to add events or just to make things run smoother so do not hesitate. Now is the time. Send them an email. I hope all the polls taken were of some help.

I get back to my original thought. Come play with us and be part of the event that seperates this site from so many others. Vote. Be counted. Show us your work and get matched up against some of the best. It is more for the fun than the prizes ( they are nice too) By entering contests and just voting shows Jeff and the whole committeee that what they are doing is for a good and that people do care.

Once again thanks to Jeff and all involved in last years event.

Well said John!!! There may be a tendency to think, "I can't offer anything that has not been done already". This isn't a good argument, I would rather say, "Am I better at this today than I was yesterday?" You can't compete against the whole world, only compete against yourself.

Hi John

I think it's the 80/20 rule and more so on the web.
Thanks to all who make these events possible.

Yes but that percentage doesn't even add up. I just hope more interest develops with all these new members coming on board.

It is different when a forum has many different aspects of say woodworking or sports or something. But this site is dedicated to one thing, Pen making. People know this when they sign up.

Like I said maybe I am reaching for something that is not there.

You have described the tip of the iceberg, John.

As one of the bash planners, this year there were 19 involved. Each of the major contests needs it's OWN chairman. Yet, we had two chairmen running 6 contests---wonder why there are NOT more contests???:rolleyes:

Yes, the "voting" threads are always pitiful turnout. Best I can recall was approaching 300 replies---yet we know there are about 2000 members on the site sometime during the month. The remaining 1700+ can't figure out how to "click on a button"??:confused: Or just don't care!

Give up on penmaking if you can't master the mouse!!:biggrin:

And then there are the "helpful critical evaluations" each year---usually by people who have contributed no time or effort into the site but are very opinionated about how something should be done. The old saying, "Put up or..........." occurs to me often.:mad:

Mike Broberg attempts to incorporate feedback into each new year's planning. Not surprisingly, even the most popular ideas are supported by 60 to 70 percent of the voting membership. So, EVERY policy will have 30 to 40 percent who "have a better way", which is in the minority.

So, no matter how the bash is planned, we will NOT please ALL the people.

It may surprise you to know that even those who PLAN and WORK on the event don't always agree with the way the execution is decided. BUT, we need to do SOMETHING--and UNANIMOUS acceptance is unlikely, so Mike takes the reins and directs the team. Thankfully, team members react favorably and understand.

Next year we hope to have quite an event!!

Wanna make the team?? It requires some effort, and the only reward is seeing a job done and knowing you helped.

Don't worry, though---a few people will generously lavish criticism on the way you did it!!:eek:

That is MY view, from the inside, looking out.

This year was my first bash. I had nothing to compare with and generally feel that it was well run. It was great fun and I certainly hope to participate next year. Whatever the results of the Bash polls, if nothing changed for next year I would still have a blast.

Many thanks to those who put in so much time making it happen. Don't be discouraged by those who criticize. Even those who criticized still participated!

Assuming that I am still able next year, I will probably volunteer to participate as a helper of some sort.

First of all, MANY thanks to those who help run this event each year.

Now, as for the OP, 14,000 members does not indicate Active member numbers. It would be interesting to see how many unique log-ins there were in the past 30 days. That would give us a much better idea of how active (or inactive) the 14,000 members are. They won't be voting if they're not coming to the site.

I don't believe I voted on any of the post-bash polls simply because my opinion wasn't strongly enough one way or the other- I didn't want to influence a decision that maybe others felt more strongly about for better reasons.

With all of that said, I understand how hard it is to get volunteers to help out. I'm finishing up my term of President of my daughter's Pre-K through 3rd grade elementary school PTO and last month was out BIG annual fundraiser. If it wasn't for our executive board, it would have been a flop. Very disheartening to run a meeting telling people you need their help to make the school better for their kids, and watch them still sit and do nothing.

OK, off my soapbox, too LOL.
