Band saw blade ?

I believe I read some where about taking a stone and rounding over the back of the blade. What is the reason for this and does it help?

Jack

Jack it really is not needed on a bandsaw blade but some do it to help when doing scroll type work. It helps the blade spin easier and helps to eliminate the burning of the wood as you spin the wood in tight corners. If you are doing nothing but straight cuts or resawing do not waste your time.

This is actually a practice that is done alot with scrollsaw use. This is because there you are constantly spining the wood in tight corners. In scrollsaw work the cut is a finished cut and no sanding is necessary so you do not want burn marks and this happens alot with soft woods or light colored woods. That is a story for another day though. Hope that answers your question.

i really think it helps because when you get a saw blade that is not welded just right you end up with a small defect on the back of the blade that will catch on the wood being cut. i take a fine grit stone and grind both sides of the blade at 45% and also the back. i use a paper towel to make sure the back of the blade is smoooth.

I have a stone I keep just for that job. It takes the 2 sharp square edges off the back. The blade does not get as hot when it runs.
May be a old wifes tell but makes sense to me.
