Hey All,

I was trimming some Bloodwood Blanks yesterday and about 3/4 way thru a blank the blade snapped. Yikes - never had that happen before. It was a 3/8 inch blade from a reputable dealer here in Atlanta. Since I've only used the blade for a couple weeks should I assume it was defective? Could I have had the tension wrong? Any ideas for this relatively inexperienced woodworker?

Thanks,
Mike G.

Lots of things might have killed your blade. Wrong tension, bad weld on blade, metal in wood, wood not securly flat on table, pushed into blade too fast, any number of things...
Try to think of the events leading up to the problem, double check your Saw's specifications for tension, table setup instructions and see if anything sticks out and correct for the future.

Also look at your blade and see where the break area is, this will at least give you an idea if it was the weld or not. WC sells a little kit that you can rebraze your broken blades if you are so inclined. I used to sell them on a regular basis to people who lived farther away from town.[:)]

Where did it snap? If it is on the weld spot then I would take it back. If it was not the weld spot then It may be many other causes.

What WOODLVR said [:D]

Mike, it will be impossible to prove the cause of the failure. But, do take the blade with you and ask for an exchange. The worst that can happen is they say no. OTOH, they may, as a matter of good business relations, say yes.

Well, deal with good retailers and they will take care of you. Returned broken blade, they replaced it with no questions. Hurray Highland Hardware...sorry probably shouldn't give a plug but they are so nice to work with.

Happy for you. Both plugs and zings are OK as long as they are justified.
