so... long story short... i bring my centers together, and there is nothing wrong... as soon as i put any sort of attachment in the headstock ( mandrel, G3 chuck) i get almost an 1/8 to a 1/4 inch of wobble from the headstock end... i am about to tear my hair out over this, as this lathe was just replaced by WC because of a bent spindle. it is the Rikon 70-105 Pen Lathe. all the tapers are clear an clean. anyone have any ideas... maybe i missed something in set up? any help would be much appreciated!

If you turn on the lathe with the dead center in the headstock does It show any indication of wobble as well?

Just walked out to the shop and tried it... there is the faintest amount of movement... this is a brand new lathe out of the box, so now i am thinking i missed something...

the reason i am hesitant to take it back, is because this is the second lathe in a row with this issue... its hard for me to believe that i would get 2 bad lathes in a row from a company like rikon... (or am i being too forgiving?) ill take some video today if that would help?

Have you called Rikon directly about your issue?
Sounds like your Woodcraft store has been very supportive but maybe you need to call Rikon and see what they have to say. Perhaps you need one from another batch or maybe they will authorize a bump up to the next model.
You have nothing to loose here and most likely a lathe that runs true.

Good luck!

i talked to Rikon with the first lathe... with in a few min their techs told me to take it back because i was sold a lathe with a bent spindle... the second one came from the WC distribution center in WV... i guess at this point im just going to have to call.... very disheartening as i am now way behind on some orders...

WC may have it back in stock at the store so you may be able to get a new one the same day plus they can plug it in and see what it is doing. I wouldn't start taking it apart as you may void the warranty.

Good luck with getting your problem solved. I hope it is quickly.

If I may, I will make an observation/suggestion. Please don't take this wrong.
I know everyone is watching their dollars but if I were taking orders and needing to get them out in a timely fashion, I would surely have a back up lathe under the bench somewhere. Even if it is an inexpensive HF lathe. Would be a lifesaver in this situation and could be a drilling or buffing lathe at other times.

Maybe there is someone nearby that can help you out till you can get this resolved either with the loan of a mini lathe or letting you come to their shop.

Keep us posted on the outcome on the Rikon.

Have you tried placing dead centers in both the head and tail stock? Place them point to point. Rotate the head stock spindle. Any problem should be easy to see.

I live in Australia and I have had a recent experience such as yours. I bought my lathe in June 2015. It was purchased from a company on the other side of Australia, some 2,700km away. Their prices with delivery were cheaper than buying locally.

I had a number of issues, starting with a motor failure within the first 3 weeks....they sent out a replacement motor. Then I had a switch fail on me....they sent out a replacement switch. Then a few weeks later, the motor failed again...they sent out another motor. A few weeks after that, the switch failed again. This time I had a good run of around 2 months before the motor failed again.

After contacting them again, they told me the guy who does the warranty work will get back in touch with me. When he did finally get back in touch, he spoke of a full refund. After further discussion, we agreed on a midi lathe as a replacement with the cash difference and they would pay for the freight.

Because of the cost of the return freight, they left the old MC1100 lathe with me. I now have a motor rewind company looking to see how we can get it back up and running.

If it was not for my persistence on following up the warranty, I would have been stuck with a lemon. So I urge you to follow through and contact the company concerned and see what they can do for you.

Dave.

!!UPDATE!!

So WC refunded me the cost of the Rikon... as well as discounted a Jet 1015 for the trouble. i turned 2 things as soon as i set it up, and they came out beautiful!! As a bit of a side note... one of the guys at WC said he had seen some sort of buliten in the last couple of days saying that Rikon had got bad batch of bearings that were causing all the issues.

overall happy now that everything has been settled. now to get to turning!!

Glad you got it taken care of Logan. Good stuff to Woodcraft for making it right!

Now, GO TURN, TURN, TURN!

Persistence does pay off. Good luck with your new lathe.
