Back Painting

it amazes me that the back painting of a blank can make such a difference. i knew it and have haeard others talking abouit but had not personally noticed yet. well today i completed the second of 2 pens with the same blank just painted differently. NOw i know that even the same color commercial balnks will vary a little bit, but these two were very close out of the bag. they are both Woodcraft abalone blanks. the click pen was back painted and tube painted blask. the regular cigar was back painted and tubes painted white. there difference is amazing. take a look.

Pens Look Great by the way, It's amazing what different shades of back painting will do to a blank this is the same blank painted white and black

Can someone clue this relative newbie into "back painting". I have seen the posts but do not know what you guys are doing. Someone posted an incredible pen earlier that his six year old had painted but didn't give details. Thanks for the info.

We are painting the wall of the hole drilled in the blank. Painting the "hole" will keep the brass tube from showing through the acrylic once it is turned thin for the pen. Just painting the tube will allow glue to show between the blank and the tube. Some paint both the hole and the tube and even color the glue if using two part epoxy. Personally, I think back painting the "hole" is enough and works well for me.
