"The Aussie pen blanks with character"

This is the start of a new series of sales based on "groups" of 250gr of pre-selected pen blanks from my timber collection. These are the blanks that are kept a side for their uniqueness in many respects, including the small available quantity. Most of these blanks will be a one off, to probably never been found again so, being part of my timber species list, most of them can not be compared with any "normal" blanks normally produce by those species, as they look in most cases, totally different.

These are indeed the exotic Aussie blanks with "character", for many of us the "gems" of the tree. These are provided in groups of 6 (six) blanks cut at 21mm square and 130mm long, one of each specie, with some variation of species in between groups. They consist of dry wood, some are "perfect" blanks, some are spalted, some have knots, some have borer holes, some need some hardening, some have other natural flaws, and some have colours and textures, absolutely out of this world..! this is what make these blanks what they are!

I want to make sure, those pen turners that value this type of blanks, can reach them without being concern about the excessive cost and expense these blanks can reach from other sources. These are genuinely Australian grown timbers, cut by myself, and in my own town of Mt. Compass in the edge of the Adelaide Hills of South Australia.

So here is the deal;

- Each group is 250gr in weight including the heavy duty envelope.

- Each group is sold as one item.

- You can buy as many groups as you want.

- Each group has one blank of each species but other groups can be identical in the species selected.

- All blanks are dry, ready to be worked on.

Now the best part, the price;

** All prices include international air-freight, to Canada and USA (most other countries will be the same price).

** 1 x group (6 blanks) - 250gr ---- Total cost AU$17.30

** 2 x groups (12 blanks) - 500gr ---- Total cost AU$29.30

** 3 x groups (18 blanks) - 750 ---- Total cost AU$41.30

** 4 x groups (24 blanks) - 1.kg ---- Total cost AU$53.30

PS: -All timbers are water sprayed before the pic is taken!
*I recommend that you write down the names of the blanks in the same order as presented, of the group(s) you buy, those names will be deleted after the Group is sold!

Yes Richard, there are lots of Australian Olive blanks to come, Majestic Olive, Wild Olive and Old Olive root, as also another 30 species of timbers from the same area (my Town).

All these timbers are already available on my eBay store (address in my signature), in pen blanks, bottle stoppers blanks, 2" , 3" & 4" square blanks (pepper shakers, etc) and many sizes of round blanks for bowls, platter, plates, etc., etc. Have a look...!:wink:

I got a message this morning from Bonacord, letting me know that his parcel (pen blanks) arrived...!:eek: how quick is that all the away to the UK?, one week...!:biggrin:

The city of Adelaide is only about 80km from here and I don't know how many times, items took the same time to arrive...!:mad: walking both ways wouldn't take me that long...!:wink:

Anyway, lets see who gets the next parcel?????

Well, everyone got those blanks, no problem!:biggrin:

It is a good idea to have in the work-shop at least 0.5 litre of timber hardener to use on any of the blanks that are partially or fully spalted, together with other reasons why the blank has soft spots. Many other very light timbers with a open grain and cell structure, can do with a soaking in the hardener, this will "stabilize"/harden the full blank to a much safer and easier turning experience.

One of the best ways to use the hardener is to pour it into a glass container (jam jar type) with a good lid. Insert the blanks you want to harden in it and fill completely with the hardener liquid solution, fill as much as you can as the wood will soak some of the hardener and is important that the blank(s) are fully submersed of all times. Leave it there for 3 or 4 days, to make sure the solution soaks through the tighter parts of the wood, then remove it/them and lay it flat on top of a news paper (dripping). Depending of what temperatures you are exposed to, the blanks should be dry to work is a couple of days, unless mechanical heaters are used to accelerate the process. Attention should be taken with any possible open flame to close to the blank (inflammable!:eek:). You can leave the used hardener in the glass jar (with a good lid), or pour it back into its original container for further uses!

Anyway, I just though in explain the hardener process so that people understand that some blanks would be useless without it!
CA can be used also as a hardener, this will be more expensive even tough, a lot faster...! Larger amounts of CA on a single blank, will create a strong chemical reaction with plenty of fumes that are extremely dangerous to human health! (please use safety gear!).
