I saw this log as I was helping out another motorist, saw the spalting and threw in the back of the Jeep. After it (and me) thawed out, I cut a piece off and made these blanks. Anyone know what it is?

Great looking blanks Jim. That is good Karma. I carry a chain in my pickup all the time too...pull out at least 2-3 people a year during the winter on the way home from work. I like to help people out in those situations..it feels good.

I've seen sweetgum and sycamore spault in that same pattern, and very close in color too. Many light colored deciduous woods are susceptible to bacterial invasion that produces that type of pattern. A look at the bark and or a half log split down the middle might make the identification more sure.

I'm not sure that is white enough to be hackberry... the HB I have is lots whiter in color and the black spalting veins are much darker... It really looks more like some of the spalted maple I have cut up...

Here are a couple of pieces I turned from HB and some spalted maple blanks that I have on hand.
