I'm going out on a limb and say that they are both beech and the difference is where the blanks came out of the tree. Beech can be pretty variable.

I'm pretty sure they are both beech. The top blanks looks a little spalted, beech will spalt white often.Look at both photos and you can see flecks similar to quarter sawed oaks rays.Bob is right beech has many faces behind it.How about an end grain shot, this is more the way they ID woods is with end grain comparison.Good Luck,Victor

I hope you are right Gary, I could use some maple. I have so many Beech blanks, I am swimming in them.

Wayne - Will have to get a microscope first, lol. But I can sand the end and take a close up picture if it will help.

The only level I messed with is the white level in GIMP.

I have plenty of maple if you wanna trade..

Brian,
Let me finish cutting this up and we can talk business. Still not sure what the rest is that I haven't cut up.

The good news is that while I was looking closer at some that I had cut up, it appears that some are spalted and discolored and therefore not quite as boring and plain.
