I will be flying into Manchester, NH next week, renting a car, and driving up the Maine coast for a couple of days. Then, I am driving up to Vermont. I prefer to travel with my trusty Glock when I am out on the road and was thinking of tagging it and bringing it with me. Does anyone know the laws for carrying a handgun in your car in these states?

Maine law:

Carrying
It is unlawful to carry any firearm concealed about the person without having a concealed carrying permit. This includes carrying in an automobile glove compartment, or other area where the firearm is under the person^s control. It is not unlawful to carry a firearm openly.
It is unlawful for a person, while in or on a motor vehicle or in or on a trailer or other type of vehicle being hauled by a motor vehicle, to have a firearm with a cartridge or shell in the chamber or in an attached magazine, clip or cylinder or a muzzle-loading firearm charged with powder, lead and a primed ignition device or mechanism, except for a law enforcement official in the line of duty.

Curtis you won't be in Texas the only thing that needs shooting up here are the critters.

This is just my opinion Curtis: IF you get pulled over, in a rented car, with a handgun on the seat next to you, the officer is NOT going to be real friendly.

I expect he will ask you what purpose the gun has, in this car, in this state.

I don't think there is a good answer to that.

(There may be GREAT answers in Texas, but there's a shortage of rattlers on the east coast.)

last rattlesnake seen in NH,VT,ME was in Bear Brook State Park in NH in 1976 LOL

Well, Curtis COULD tell the officer that and mention that it proves Curtis has scared them all away---don't think it will WORK, but it's better than nothing!!

What on earth would you need a gun for?

I'll give you a good tip - don't cross the border with it! More trouble than it's worth!

Andrew

Because I feel safer traveling with it when I am out and about in a car. I never carry on me, I just like having it in my vehicle. Never needed it before but I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. I have one in my truck at all times, legally, btw!

Also, unfortunately, I will not be able to visit Canada on this trip even though I will only be 24 miles from the border. I do not have a current passport and my government says I am not allowed to leave or return without it!

When my drivers lic comes up for renewal I'm getting the enhanced lic VT residents can get for travel to Canada

Forget VERMONT! Come to Georgia! We could use the tourism, you've got a free place to stay, in a resort community.....and most will not believe this, BUT THERE ARE COMMUNITIES IN GEORGIA THAT REQUIRE YOU TO BE ARMED!

If you can't bring your own gun, we'll give you one of ours. As you might imagine, WE HAVE NO VIOLENT CRIME HERE. Georgia State Law bans firearms for mentally disturbed and felons. Local law REQUIRES firearm ownership.

Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that "bad folks" can't and don't want to live here.

Everybody waves, smiles and asks "how's yo mama and them".....but they are still packing. And they will shoot, if you don't "act right".

Oh I don't know...some tourists could use a good scare LOL:eek::wink:

Curtis, where in Maine are you going?

Also be warned...once you get north of Augusta, no one uses turn signals properly.

Hey Curtis, Check out his link. It has all of the laws by state and a list of reciprocity agreements.

I know everyone here has good intentions, but I don't like to take other people's word for it when it comes to something as serious as gun laws. I like to verify information myself seeing as I would be the one held accountable if anything were to happen.

Good luck.

If you are worried about the moose and deer, you'll probably need something bigger anyway!

Yeah, Curtis, the northeast is really a different world than Texas. Actually, many would say the same thing about Texas when looking the other way. : )

Enjoy your trip and the beautiful scenery. You'll see more maple trees than you can ever imagine! Bring some warm clothes.

Don't even think about coming to Canada with a firearm Curtis. You need permits to even own a rifle and even harder ones to get for a handgun. I need a permit to even move mine out of my house then only to a range or other designated spot and then it must be unloaded and in a locked case.
