I'm looking at completely changing careers and am interested in the medical imaging field. I would love to talk to someone who could answer some questions. If that's you, please shoot me a PM. Thanks.

I am not in the field. But I know some of them from working at the hospital. I'll see if they can help.

my wife is an xray tech/bone density tech, and works with the students coming right of the school here locally. what kind of questions you got?

Mostly I'd like some info on required schooling/training. I did a little research online today but I was bombarded with ads for online programs that sounded kind of sketchy. I have a BA, but it is not science related. Will I have to go back and get another 4 year degree, or can I become certified in two years or less?

I am not sure about California, but in Kentucky (where I live), it is a 2 year vocational program. I did a quick Google search for California radiology license, and found a state sponsored link to a list of schools in California for radiology training. The link is here, and points a PDF file listing the schools. From that link, you should be able to find enough information to check each school's web site for specific requirements.

I am not in radiology, but worked for 6 years in radiation oncology, and have spent the last 18 years in IT working with our radiology department here at the hospital.

Hi Ben,

If you haven't already, make sure you check out the ARRT website (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists). You will need to attend an ARRT-certified education program to become registered. It will be a two year program for you to obtain the basic certification. You'll probably want to pursue post-primary certification as well, since that's where many of the better jobs are. They'll require a degree (associates or bachelors) starting in 2015, so you are already up on most of the candidates since you have a BA.
