In another current thread about which printers to buy, some of the discussion has touched on the low useage of ink jets as being a problem for home use.

A few years ago I bought an Epson workforce 610, one of those printer/fax/copier/scanner machines that for a while worked great. the print quality is getting progressively worse, especially with the red and blue covering less than half the test pattern and that no amount of nozzle or head cleaning makes it any better. I've gone through cartridges of ink trying to clean the nozzles and I'm convinced that the ink has dried up inside some where and the self cleaning process no longer works. Before I just toss it and it's un-used cartridges in the trash, as one last ditch effort, is there a way to take some parts loose and give it a good cleaning myself? It doesn't look to be very "take apart friendly".

George it probably has dry ink in the head in the printer. Epson makes these heads part of the printer so even changing the ink will not clear it up, there are ways to clean them but I have not done that before. On HP Printers the heads are actually part of the ink cartridge so when you change inks you get a new clean head. I have tossed 2 epson's because of this and have never tossed an HP just changed the cartridge to fix it. Wish I could be of more help.

Look at this from previous post http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/kits/epson/K70 a cleaning kit for the jets.

Don't know that particular printer, but Epson printers are notorious
for clogging heads and not being 'maintenance friendly'. Once the head
is gone, it is often less expensive to replace the printer than to just
the head. Pigment inks are more prone to clogging. You must print at
least one page per week using all the colors.
That being said..

It is sometimes possible to dissolve clogged ink in the head and
nozzles.

Fold a paper towel in half and get it under the print head. Place the
paper towel in the paper path and slide the printer head over it. Soak
the paper towel with Simple Green. (some say just distilled water, or
hot distilled water, but I find the Simple Green works better) Leave
this for a day or more, keeping the towel wet. You can slide the head
back and forth over the towel to wipe off the nozzles.

If you are feeling ambitious (and if your printer pulls the ink through
hoses) you might be able to get a couple of feet of ink hose from
someone like inksupply.com for a few dollars. Pull the hoses off of
the head and replace with the new lengths and use a syringe or
baster to get some Simple Green into the head this way. Leave it
for a day or more, then run a cleaning cycle.

Again.. that might not apply to your printer, I'm not familiar with the
model. But good general info if someone else has a clogged head
and large cartridges and a hose-fed ink head.
