Steve,
Just treat it as wood , although some of the antler (that's not straight) is a bit of a chalenge to drill . Also get ready for some horrible smell at times .

Steve,
Here is my two cents. I soak mine overnight before I use it. Seems like it helps to me. And turns better.
Also, wear a mask when you work with it. Run a vacuum, dust collector. Try to avoid the dust.

I don't see the need to soak them, maybe confusion with the water buffalo horn?
I see that is normally reccomended.
I normally fill any open grain with CA an that might be a problem.
I realize soaking them would keep the dust down.
I do have a D.C> hook for the lathe and don't have any issues with the dust.
If I am cutting a lot of it I do hook up the D.C> on the bandsaw.

First, you send it all to me. I'll prepare it into a lot of pens and give you a report. [:o)]

I'm new and have never used it before.
Any tips on what I need to do to prepare or use antler?

Thanks

Well here it is.
My first antler turn.
Photo quality not so good but you can see the pen.
This stuff is wicked hard. I used a full AO saftey mask
(that my wife uses for glass bead making)and had no problem with the smell. Drilling was interesting too.
This is only my seventh pen. I plan to make more from anter.
Thanks to all for the info.

Steve

Nice turning, Steve. Is that a digital camera you're using? If it is, then it looks like your white balance setting might be off.
