I have yet to turn antler, so my opinion is only visually. I would prefer some of the natural surface; to me it is a nice design feature.

I prefer some natural bark left on, although it can be a challenge to get the blank drilled just right so it's possible. I've probably turned close to 100 antler pens and realize how fickle they can be. :wink:

Nice pen and I always try to turn them with bark showing. Gives them nice character.

Jim, what a beautiful pen. I have turned several of the antler pens and prefer the look of natural antler, sometimes difficult to do. You did a nice job keeping rough look. Great job.

Looks like I'm outnumbered, but I like my antler pens without the natural surface. Maybe it's my OCD, but even antler pens I like to be round and smooth. That said, I like it when the color of the surface shows, but that is pretty hard to control. Out of 5 pens I usually get 4 that I like the colors and 1 that is "meh". Preferences aside, that's a nice looking pen, well done!

I've turned several antler pens. It is so tricky to get them drilled successfully that we usually can't plan for whether or not the bark stays on. However, every antler is unique and often has color variations even within the center, so I'm almost always pleased with them even if I've turned the bark all the way off.

I like to have a little bark left but I don't sweat trying to drill so I can get it. If it happens then great. I worry more about the porous marrow part in the center than anything else. Some antler is worse than others but as long as I can get a nice smooth even finish I'm happy. I even like the yellow and grey shades in some antler.
One more vote for leaving some bark on the pen.

I sell a lot of B/A pens in antler and sell most with the bark on and the more the better. But some people like the look of the inner part of the antler as some can have very good features.

Beautiful antler pen! That will make an excellent gift or product for a sportsman. I have turned a few. I don't always leave the bark on, but I do like a combination of tones -- light and dark.
