Something like has probably been posted before but I don't remember.

The Golden Trianglr Woodturners will be doing a Freedom Pens TOT at the Denton, Tx Arts & Jaz fest on April 27-29. (stop by and turn a few) We have 250 kits to do and that's a lot of drilling. I made this up out of stuf around the shop to speed things up. It works good because all the blanks were cut to the same size. Stick one in, drill, remove, hit the jig with a blast of air to clean it and do the next.

Hey, that's a great design!! I might just have to borrow that idea. I would suggest a dovetailed slot where a strip of 1/4" hard board can slip in side to side as a repaceable insert. Make the insert wider than the jig and just keep sliding a new "floor" under the drill hole. Thanks for my next jig project!! [:D]

They're called toggle clamps. Most general tool suppliers have them.
This is Wholesale tools selection.

Phil,

Did you make the angle cuts with a bandsaw or tablesaw or what? I'm curious to know how you got them so accurate looking. Also, how did you connect the angle cut block to the mounting board? Glue or nails or what? I'm getting ready to build the jig in the next few days! Thanks a bunch for posting this idea...

FWIW.. The best way to cut it is with a table saw set to 45 and a scrafical board on the mitre gauge. I would make the notch 1" deep as this design will allow a 3/4" blank to be cradled in nice and a larger 1" blank to be held better than if it was only 3/4". Most important is to make sure that the edge against the table while cutting is square so that your cuts stay square. Attachment with screws & glue should hold just fine.

I squared the block on the table saw then cut the V on the band saw after checking the table for square. It's glued and screwed up from the bottom. :>)
This was just a quickie jig because we had so many of the same size to do. Having a replaceable insert in the base for the drill holes would be a big inprovement.

hey all... just wanted to let you know i made up one of Phil's jigs last night, no replaceable insert, but I've got a ton of little scraps that i can just throw underneath it when drilling. my first test didn't come out well, so i reinforced the block with the V cut in a little more and my second and third tests were by far the straightest holes i've drilled yet. and the jig took no more than 1 hr to build.
thanks again Phil!
