another CA thread

alright, i had good luck with the method i concocted two nights ago but when trying a similar method today... things didn't turn out so well. i pretty much tried fangar's method note for note today..

my question regarding CA is why would you want to go back and sand a coat with 320 on up to the final MM sheet before you're going to buff and polish it? it seems to me that you would want your glossy, plasticy looking CA coat to buff and polish, am i incorrect here? shouldn't the plastic polish step be polishing the CA plastic?

when getting ready to buff, what do your final CA coats look like, shiny or kinda sanded? (if you know what i mean)

maybe my sanding needs work or maybe i'm not quite waiting long enough for the ca coats to dry...

any light shed would be appreciated.

I just got my CA glue finish started and I love it, but I don't sand with 320 after my CA finishing, I will though, do mm 4000 to 12000 at the end and I think that sanding W/ 320 would just take your finish off. But do use the plastic polish at the end and then buff, great method. My final CA coats look shiny, very shiny. You are waiting long enough for them to dry I'm sure. But remember this, I got this from another thread. Always have the wood polished the best you can with MM before finishing with CA, and then again before buffing.

would you mind putting down a list of your steps? i'm curious to see the different CA application methods...

do you use any myland's sanding sealer before you start in on the CA?

or if i can basically list it,
1) sand until 400 or so, and then MM to get nice and polished
2) a sanding sealer of some sort (thin ca or myland's?)
3) any sanding here?
4) begin coats of which viscosity CA? how many coats?
5) plastic polish
6) buff with white diamond
7) TSW

Search the archives, look in the library, search the other pen fourms and you will find enough CA finishing techniques to keep you in reading material for several weeks. [][]

ya know, i tried that and all of the threads end up heading in some random direction dealing with laqcuer or shellac or why this person doesn't like CA or why that person thinks the application technique doesn't work... but thanks, i'll check it back again.

in the meantime, if anyone wants to just put the steps of their own particular CA technique down, this could be a very useful thread for people down the road!

Andrew,

Don has given you some good leads. Your question is another example of why it is a good idea to spend some time in the library that Jeff has on the site.

As I said on your other thread, find one you like, follow it exactly until you have it mastered. Then, and only then, start trying to adjust it to your particular needs. If you take a mish-mash of all of the methods, you likely will end up with a poor finish.
