Finish

Mark,
You do awesome work. Just curious as to what finish did you use?

Seven

I am simple, I use System Three glossy spar varnish diluted 4:1 with mineral spirits. The stuff costs $35+ per quart, but worth every cent. I sand to 400 grit and hand rub six thin coats of finish on most marine products. I sand with 400 grit after the first three coats and 1000 grit after that. I use crumpled brown paper bag after letting the finish cure for 24-36 hours to buff out the dust nibs.

It's like a nice pen

Beautiful as always. I'd be terrified of just how quickly I'd destroy something that pretty out fishing!

I WANT them to use it like I want my pens to be used. All my boxes go to sea and return to fish another day. The box shown in my avatar was built in 2006; it goes to sea on 3, 8 and 10 day fishing trips every year. It looks great today.

I made a steampunk pen with an absolutely flawless finish and gave it as a gift to a local eatery. My cost was $50 plus serious labor. I admit being horrified to see it jammed into a cup with five other pens, scissors and the like on a later visit. That hurt, but I left with the owner unaware that I took offense. Oh well it was being used...
