Look what I found in the forest yesterday. I got excited when I first saw it, but upon closer inspection found it was rotten all the way to the core.

This is birch, which IMHO, birch burl with eyes like these make the finest wood pens there are.
Could have made a hundred pens out of those burls!

That's too bad. Birch trees around here don't live quite long enough to become much of anything....never mind burlin' up. And the heat/moisture makes 'em rot pretty fast too!
