Air con in a workshop?

hello folks- I'm having problems with my workshop getting too hot in the summer months- yeah yeah I know I'm in the u.k where it rains all the time and we don't get the heat some of you guys do but my workshop is a concrete sectional building and has only 750 cubic feet or air space- so any heat generated in there also stays in there and adds to the problem.

so my question is- will an air con unit work o.k with the dust in my workspace? bearing in mind that in such a small shop I can't really put it anywhere where it won't get some shavings or dust on it

George I installed one this summer and duct taped a furnance filter over the front so dust won't reach the actual filter. A plus is I can see when its dirty. A little duct tape and a new filter and I'm good to go!
 
I have a built in unit (in the wall similar to motels) that does both heat and cold. My shop is small (11 x 16) and it works great. I change the filter quite often and use air to blow out the cooling coils. I like the idea of the taped on external filter. It works great....Seamus really likes the cool this time of year:biggrin::biggrin:. Rarely use the heat but I have a few times...if nothing else than to knock off the cold just a little in the winter.

A window unit with frequent cleaning of the filter should be ok. Placement should be considered so as to not stir up more dust than necessary.
 
thank you for your replys- unfortunatley a window unit isnty possible, i'm looking at the portable units.
My workshop is 8' x 9' with a roof height of 6'6" at the sides and 7'6" at the ridge- but aswell as doing pens i do all of my hollow form works and boxwork in there and even though i have a ambient filter and two very good extractors the shavings and dust go everywhere.
