Hello there!

What do you guys think about the AI augmented photos of products, specifically, wood turned. And in our case, pens of course? I would like to start a debate here,so I'll begin with my view:

I have always paid high attention to background and light when makin photos of my pens. I take photos with my phone (Xperia 10V - an opposite of a flagship) , without any post-processing or editing except cropin. Now,with AI like Google Nano Banana available for free, I feel like we got on a really thin ice. Because once someone uses AI to generate a background for a product photo...how can we be sure it was only the background that was generated,or edited? Thats why, in my eyes, product photos with AI generated background are no longer photos of real products. But just "illustration photos".

An image of some of my pens, left original, right AI background.

Whats your opinion??

Look good when you can choose the background and settings for optimum quality.
When I take photos with my Samsung A13, I use a tan cloth background.

I don't really see anything wrong with it, as long as people aren't changing the originality of the product.
Well, and how to tell? See my collage, and the most bottom couple, with four slimlines...the AI changed the angle from which the photo was taken, and clearly, some details were not visible on the original photo. Are those real?

AI is not perfect by far. It all depends on the results you want and the extent of AI's abilty to acheive it.

I like the AI modified photo here. Looks good and prefer it over your original. I like the pens that were made and they show well.
If you look close enough, there are some slights differences in the AI version from my original version. Slight grain and light reflection changes.

Well AI is here to stay and will only get better. I think we have to use it as another tool. Many of us are not professional photographers and I am sure not. If helps enhance a photo then it is a good thing. Now Maybe where this becomes a problem but happens anytime you post a photo in any forum or other place, it can be copied and pasted many times in Pintrest. just about all my pen photos are on Pintrest over the years. Now I have no problems with that and if others use the idea or concept to make their own version, go for it. But do not take my pen and use in your web site or claim to to be yours or even lead on to that it may. Now is it happening? I am sure it is but i have no way of controlling this. It is called integrity. Same goes for my scrollsawn stuff and ideas or patterns I made over the years. Now I use to work for Steebar Corp. when they first started out and were owned by a very good person. I made many products for him and created many patterns that I basically sold the rights to. But that is another story.

Back to your pens and other people's pens. There are a few people here that have that talent to take great looking photos and may have high tech equipment or better after market refining skills and they may need them more so because they sell on web sites and there photos is what they depend on to make the sales. but when posting in forums like this I do not think it really matters as long as the photo is clear. What I do hate is when people here post photos they give no info and we have to guess what kit, what wood or what neat trick was used to make it. Now if they rely on questions at least give us something to ask and pursue. That is a petpeeve of mine here ever since I started here. Yes love looking at all kinds of photos but more info is needed. Way before AI became a thing, many photo enhancement programs could do lots of things to change appearance of your pens. Still are able to. I use to use PhotoBucket all the time because it was free and they had all kinds of things you could do to make the pens look better. It is ashame they went to a pay to play system and cancelled many people photos over the years that did not play. I lost many.

I still have photoshop on my computer. It's a pretty old version, but I used it a lot when I use to take pictures of my coins. I use it a little now for editing images for my laser engraver, but I don't use it as much as I use to. As I see it, we still make our own projects, and we still take our own pictures of them. AI is just another program to give us a little helping hand to enhance what we have created. Not much different from photoshop or other photo editing programs. Just a little easier.

I have nothing against post-processing of photos in Photoshop or similar programmes. Color adjustment, contrast, thats okay. I also have no problem with background replacement. But I have a big problem with anything beyond this point. Because (in extreme) anyone can just generate whole photos and post here as his work. I have generated one as an example now, usin just a single prompt in free Google Gemini Banana, looks cool, right?:)

I have to say I would think this never happens here. Why would you? A little thing called entegrity has to come into play. Yes AI today can do any type photos and we see many political examples everyday. I think we would wanted to be judged on our talents. Now I can see the thought process you are presenting as a tool to help in designing things and to get ideas from. But the claiming you made it is just like you see some people's web sites and they post photos of pens that others made and people assume they made them. Now they make no mention of who made so it gets overlooked. But again if you can live with yourself then I feel sorry for you.

I agree with John. Why would anyone here want to make claim to something they didn't make? This forum is for those who want to learn and show what they've made with pride. In what years I've been here, I've never seen anything different.

You absolutely did not understand what this whole tread is about. I AM AGAINST USIN AI TO MODIFY/GENERATE ANY IMAGES TO POST HERE. My whole point was that once someone uses AI to even change background, then you can't tell if the photo is genuine.

Well I do not know about that I never did it. I still think you can use it as a tool. Set a background that you do not normally use. I may have to try that at some time. Could be interesting. Good way to clean up your photography downfalls.
