Hi ,
I had joined the forum sometime back and been a less regular visitor. Had self learned to make some pens too. The largest difficulty I have come across was to source affordable pen kits.

in my shipboard life, access to stores is very limited, in fact as good as non-existence. Still I had tried to make some pen kits- biggest problem there was absence of fine thread taps/dies, you mostly get coarse thread taps and dies here. Finally have given up trying to make penkits or making kitless pens altogether.

Would be going home in a week where I can practice this newly learnt hobby! Have come to conclude that trying to make your own penkits is not so much fun unless you have the accurate tools- much better to buy and enjoy the penmaking part of it!

Searching the net for more affordable pen kits than those retailed in the internet , I have come to find some, mostly China and Taiwan.

Sharing those web adresses as some of you may like to avail these as well.

Today's find from Taiwan:
<< DAYACOM INDUSTRIAL CO., LTD >>

I will keep updating this thread as I get time. Meanwhile like to know from the experienced members.

Warm regards to all.

Just know with them you have to order 30 or more at a time so you can easily have a bill of $1500. The venders take that risk of ordering the numbers to get the item.

Woodturningz has best prices, exotic blanks has better value. I get different things from both all the time!
A few side notes:
Slims will be about $2-$5 wherever you look (unless you get bulk from dayacom I guess)

Standard twist Parker refill types are about $5-$12.

Most fountain pens or rollerballs will be $12-$20.

I wouldn't put TOO much effort in getting "the best deal", It's a hobby! In pen kits, you get what you pay for in almost every case.

Well, I will likely get chastised for saying this but you do not need all those taps, dies to do this. We have become to reliant upon higher end tooling and tend to believe that is the ONLY way to do things. It may be a nice way to go but unless you have lots of $ to dump then it may seem hopeless but it is not.

Hakase - - YouTube

Hakase does not use taps/dies to make high end pens and he gets by just fine.

Plus if anyone is going to say 'those are not triple start threads! I urge you to watch this one.
Nakaya Fountain Pen - - YouTube

Try Quad threading with the same tool.
