Hi Bob, nice stuff. I have a question on your pentels, if you don't mind.

Are you using the stepped drill bit offered by Woodturners Catalog to drill your pentels?

thanks,

Hi Rick,
Thanks for the compliments. Yes, I used the CSA stepped drill bit for the Pentel pencils. But, I did probably 25 Pentel pencils with two long drill bits before I bought the CSA bit.

When using two drill bits I drill with the largest bit first, then extend the hole with the smaller bit. If you drill full length with the small bit it's more likely to go off center. And of course when drilling holes that deep I always drill on the lathe with the wood in a scroll chuck and the drill bit in a Jacobs chuck in the tailstock. I'm not sure the CSA stepped bit is worth the cost, but then you only have to sell a couple pencils and it's paid for itself.

The Pentel pen is made with a standard slim-line kit, so it has 7 mm holes. The joint between the top and bottom barrels is at the top of the top finger grip groove.
Keep turning,
Bob S.

Thanks for the info Bob.

So I go to the store, and I see a half dozen pentel pencil models for sale. Now I know from experience that most of these are not suitable for remaking into wood, but which models are? Do I need to go to the local Office borg for these?

Again, thanks for your help.

Randy,
Just did a search at Staples and they have 51 Pentel pencils. Yes, there's really only one model that everyone uses for conversion to wood.

In .7mm the correct penil has on it: 0.7mm Pentil P207 and is only available in blue. 0.5mm is black, sometimes also green. 0.9mm is yellow.

There's another Pentel pencil that I think will also work:

http://www.staples.com/Catalog/Browse/Sku.asp?PageType=1&Sku=499566

It's the Pentel Forte model A57 in 0.7mm, also blue. I would expect it to take different size drill bits, and in the conversion you'll either lose the eraser or have to accomodate it in wood. The reason for considering it is that it's only about half the cost of a P207. It's also larger diameter, and the wood barrel will have to match the pocket clip, so if you want a larger pencil it would be something to consider. I think it's available in all the common lead diameters.

Hope this helps,
Bob S.
