acrylic over lacquer

This is not for a pen, a side project we are doing. But I thought you finishers would know the answer. If we spray a wood project a couple times with lacquer thinned 80/20 or so, could we hand brush some acrylic paint on it and expect it to stay?

(ps. Iknow there are better sites to ask this question, but this is were I spend my time reading and learning.)

If I am correct, the acrylic is an oil base. You can put an oil base over a lacquer base, but not a lacquer base over oil. (Enamel is and oil base BTW)

Lee has it exactly right--you can use acrylic over lacquer, but can't put lacquer over acrylic.

Why would you brush acrylic over sprayed lacquer? Acrylic is water based and needs a porous surface to really grip. You can brush it over anything but what's underneath will determine how much punishment it will take.
