Am I just weird? I can't get over not wanting to make pens from synthetic materials. There are some really beautiful blanks out there, and I have seen some super impressive pens made from synthetics posted here. I just really enjoy making things from natural materials.

Wood, antler, horn, snake skin, alternative plant ivory, leather (haven't tried that one yet). But I just don't get very excited making things out of acrylic.

Am I alone here?

Totally weird!!!

Just kidding, I actually get in moods where I want to make one or another. It also for me depends on the type of pen and just what looks good with it.

It's art, use what speaks to you!

Someone on here a long while back said wood pens can only go so far, acrylic is real beauty. Maybe, maybe not. But snazzy blank from Toni (although not PR) will knock most any wood pen off the shelf. YMMV & JMHO!!

It's been a few years, so I will quote Ed Davidson (YoYoSpin):

Wood is good,
Plastic is fantastic!!

If you make pens to give away or keep, ANY medium is fine. If you make pens to sell, most of the guys who do shows will tell you resin outsells wood by at least 10 to 1.

I guess it depends on where you want to take your hobby or business. As a former sports photographer, I used to strictly shoot action pictures and I would not shoot individual and team photos. Sure, you can separate yourself from the crowd that way but you also may be limiting yourself as like you've mentioned, there are some beautiful blanks that you can work with.

I don't know if you've ever worked with acrylics and such before but I would say to give it a try once and you may like the outcome... now this is coming from a guy who is currently turning his very first acrylic blank.

I have done a few projects from acrylic. And they did look nice. I just don't get "into it" like I do with natural materials. I was just curious if I was alone here. Seems like I may be.

At this time I'm not really looking to go not business. I have been selling pens at a little over my cost just so I can afford to make more pens.

I get excited over a nice looking piece of wood. I have always been that way, no matter if I was making cabinets, furniture, or knick knacks. Doesn't have to be anthing exotic, just anything with a nice garin pattern or some knot holes, or whatever.

Guess I'm just a weirdo, no surprise there! :bulgy-eyes:
