Abalone shells

I know a few here make blanks from abalone. I have a request for a conductors baton made with Abalone. Where does one find the small strips? I figure I will turn a small cone of black acrylic and glue them to it the recast it then turn it to shape.

anyone know if that would work and then where do I find the stuff.
