Hi All,

Not sure if any one has read about this, but I saw over on the AAW forum an annoucement about a special chapter being added to the AAW for pen makers.

I kind of consider IAP and Pen Makers Paradise my pen clubs. I think that the AAW is a big group and it might be a good thing, but wonder, what do you think of the AAW creating such a chapter, will it help us or do you have other ideas on what we need as a collective group of pen making fanatics?

I'm not sure if I will go for it or not, I will wait and see what direction it goes, but I am loyal to my favorite places such as the IAP.

I am all ready a member of AAW so I see no problem joining one more group. I love IAP but I try to join any group that might further my education farther.

Went there to check it out. I can't imagine joining that group -- they are having as ugly a "whizzing contest" as I can recall seeing in a public forum in some time...... Makes one appreciate a well managed, moderated forum such as this one, all the more...

Went where? I just visited the Principally Pens virtual chapter forum on the AAW website. Only 6 or 7 posts so far....I see nothing of a contest which you mention. I would like to know where you are talking about.

Principally Pens is a new virtual chapter of the AAW along with the segmented turners and the ornamental turners. The website is not up and running yet. In the beginning of IAP, we tried organizing with officers and bylaws and even had visions of being one of the first, if not the first, virtual chapters of the AAW. But it didn't happen.

I don't see this new virtual chapter of the AAW as being a threat to IAP nor do I see it as being in competition with IAP. Each of the penturning forums has its own niche and audience. Some of us actively participate in many of them and others focus their available time to one or two.

I certainly hope that the new virtual AAW penturning chapter doesn't begin getting negatively pounded by members of the other penturning forums. I know the guys who have started it and they are only interested in the advancement of penturning and to offer penturners another avenue in which to make information available and make those of us who are penturners better at what we do.

Do a good turn daily!
Don

Here is the forum for the penturning virtual chapter. http://www.aawforum.org/vbforum/showthread.php?t=7335T The forum and thread referenced below and by the OP is discussing AAW board actions regarding employee issues...not penturning. Is it a mess? Looks that way but let's not confuse that business with the new penturning virtual chapter.

To the AAW Forum as the OP mentioned. There you'll find this thread...

... and about a dozen others. It ain't pretty....

You've really never heard of a 'whizzing contest'? :)

All I know is this, in any type of organization, with out clear and concise checks and balances and the enforcement of them, the human factor will imminently arise.

I for one for a time now had been debating on whether or not to join the AAW (I turn more than pens). With the creation of the penturning chapter, my decision has been made and I will be joining here shortly. There is a weatlh of knowledge that can be found among a large group of wood turners and much of that knowledge can be used for turning pens. There is a frequent "unvailing" of sorts of "something new" in the pen turning realm which had already been taking place else where in the turning realm as a whole. To stay within one box can and does limited one's ability to advance beyond where they are at. It is always a good idea to get a different perspective on things, especially when one's creativity process has stalled.

And speaking of the AAW, Dick Sing, the VP of Principally Pens will be demoing at the 5th Annual Midwest Penturning Gathering in 2011!!!!!!!!!
