When I turn a bowl, I sometimes turn the headstock of the Jet 1442 outward a bit to get at the inside better. If you turn it back and don't check the alignment with the tailstock, the next pen you turn will have a lovely oval cross section [8].

One of the first things I got was MT2 alignment tool after I got a lathe with a rotating HS. Most stuff you don't have to worry about but pens really show off a little misalignment.
