Had to go to HD for a filter and a dowel rod, so I thought I'd see if they had a center finder while I was there. (stepped on mine:at-wits-end:)
Found the tool dept employee, the following conversation ensued.

ME: Do you carry center finders?
HD: What's it for?
ME: (holding up the dowel rod)Finding the center of this.
HD: why?
ME: So I can drill in the CENTER.
HD: Hang on a sec. (calls someone else asks them question) Then asks me, Do you use a hammer with it?
ME: No, a pencil, to mark the center.
HD: Why??

I give up, back to Woodcraft tomorrow.

Sounds about normal for lowes expert associates as well. The wife and me were in food city and bought a bottle of popcorn kernnals. The girl bagging our stuff asked what it was. We told her popcorn, and she asked how you make popcorn with it, without the bag.

Well, I got to say, I can't say the same about my local Home Depot. I've never asked a question the associate couldn't answer or get someone who could. I have never been treated rude or indifferent. I've never been in there that I wasn't asked if I wanted or needed help. No, they don't always have what I need, but only if it is something pretty specialized for a specific project. My local Ace Hardware is almost as good. I'm lucky I know, because I have been to other Ace's and HD's that were not so.

That's funny! I've never had that problem at my local hd, but each one is bound to be different. You can get some funky figured wood there if you search the stack long enough.

God help the world in 200 years time!!!!!!!!!
Down under, the staff at Bunnings (similar to HD and Lowes) are the same, they think you can't read, you ask for info on the product, and they read to you what's written on the box!!!!!

D_ _n man, you should be at the depot that I work at and let me assist you. I'm there only part time but I'm far from being that STUPID. But I also work maintenance/welder full time.
But I will say that they are hiring most anyone in some stores. But there's some that have people that really know what they're doing. And my I give my apologies for the I unknowledgable idiot.

My experience at Home Despot has been OK - I've found the guys in orange aprons to be closer to my age, typically retired from some other job, and knowledgeable - especially in the tools and electrical areas. Paint department - not so good. And I really like their self-service check-out system.

Lowes is another matter. You have to send out a search party to even find a sales associate, and they are usually young kids who don't have a clue. And then you go to pay, and there is only one cash register open with fifteen people standing in line while the person at the front of the line argues about the price of a 29 cent item.

On the other hand, the seasonal areas of both stores are terrible. It's now mid-January, and we have a foot of snow on the ground, so they are starting to put out lawn mowers and mower parts. But by the time Spring arrives and I need a new mower blade or spark plug, that stuff will have been put back into the warehouse to be replaced by Christmas decorations!

I met an old friend and co-worker from the construction trades in a box store one day and he said it was so difficult for him that he would probably have to quit.:frown:
Seems that being the only person with practical experience was an invitation for every other employee to call him with questions.
He got a lot of questions!

I sometimes get frustrated with both HD and Lowes. Then I remember they are a home remodeling store for home owners and small construction companies and not a Hardware store. I usually have needs way out of their product range. They didnt know what a center finder is and thought you meant center punch.

The Home Depot folks here are so sweet, loving, and helpful that I brought home one to sleep with me! She's good looking too!

In all seriousness, I know, first hand that Home Depot goes to greater lengths than any other company I've ever known to make sure the put helpful and knowledgeable associates in front of the customer, AND THE WHOLE COMPANY IS geared to help those associates help you.

If you had a bad experience, or as I have had on several occasions, exceptional service, or just have customer suggestions on how to make the stores better you should TELL HD. The HD website has a section called "voice of the customer". I promise, THEY WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!
