He went in his shop after supper to turn a few worthless wood pens for Jr Gents. First one turned out looking great. He set it aside without assembling it and started the second WW blank. The nib end turned out great. Turning the cap blank and ......what the hey.:confused: The brass started showing through the wood part. he'd turned all the way through the blank to the tube. How did that happen. he stopped and miked it numerous times and hadn't reached 0.512 yet. Wait a minute, the cap should be 0.567. CRAP.:eek:
And this is the real DUH part. He thinks he is soooo smart.:biggrin: He uses the bushings and turns one barrel at a time between centers. In this case, he turned the blank down to about 0.58-0.59, even confirmed the diameter with the calipers. He than removed the bushings to true the blank and remove any OOR that may be caused by the bushings. Somehow, between removing the bushings and replacing the blank in the lathe, he got the figure 0.512 in my head so that's what he was turning to.
So, he went to assemble the first set of blanks. Looks like he needed to sand the CA off the ends so the fittings fit flush. Carefully sand and assemble. Upon inspection, he slightly sanded the finish next to the ends.:mad: Now he needs to disassemble and repolish. He'll put that off til tomorrow before he screws it up any worse.

Your friend should give up turning and go into mind control---much more future there!!!:biggrin::biggrin:

Sorry to hear of his problems though!!!!
As one gets older, I find nighttime turning is not always a good idea:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Mannie, I had a "friend" who couldn't sleep this morning and got up and went to "his" shop about 5:30. Decided he'd use this time to glue up a half dozen Stars N Stripes pen in various styles. A couple of hours later he's nursing a massive headache from eye strain. Any way you figure it six kits no matter what they are 50 stars each...that's a lot of stars to glue in..

Sometimes it better just to walk away and chill for a few hours. :)
