In his latest video, Tim Yoder vividly demonstrates the relationship between lathe speed and heating of a turning blank when sanding.

This applies to any woodturning, but it is especially critical when the turning is thin because heating definitely can cause cracking. Pen turners beware!

The point about heat is valid but his demo is not. No one holds the sandpaper in one place. You move it and that allows cooling. Also how much pressure you apply makes a difference.

I sand at low speeds, keep the sandpaper moving and use light pressure. It is that combination that keeps the heat down.

Amount of surface area of sandpaper to surface also plays a factor.
