I got this blank in a trade with Chris (pen-turners). He called it Spalted Sindora Burl. Supposedly it was recovered from a river bottom in SE Asia, but I have no way to confirm that. I've done a couple of searches for Sindora Burl and got nothing that I consider authorative. I thought it was unusual. Any ideas.

Oh, any critique or comments (good or bad) appreciated.

Great looking pen Gary, and a real nice piece of wood. I heard of it before, but never seen or cut any.

I need to come up with better stories for my wood [:D]

Nice job, Anthony

Wish you could get a definitive response because that is beautiful wood and you have done a great job with it. Any chance you can get more? Bet you wouldn't turn it down.

Check out this thread. The thread that Old Griz refers to has been archived, but this will give you some scoop. http://www.penturners.org/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=901&SearchTerms=sindora+burl

The penturner's urban legand, huh? [:D]

Hey...I'm only repeating what I was told by my vendor. [:)]

Thanks, Lou. That was the only hit that came up for me when I searched. But, I can't find sindora as a genus, family or common name in any accepted reference material. I have no clue what it really is.

Where'dja get the kit? That's a really sharp one! The wood is outstanding, and the finish is great too; what did you use?

Looks like this web site has some for sale. I got this wood from a good friend about a year ago. He is a major importer of exotic wood from Asia so I trust his word especially since he gave the blanks to me for free. I have found a number of sites about sindora burl but have never found any for sale except this one......

Here is another one with pictures of just about evey wood you can think of. Keep in mind that the stuff I got was spalted and had been sunk in a river so it has different colors......

Guess you guys aren't using the right search engine.....

I can scan some blanks if you want but I only have about 10 left and think I'm gonna put a lock on them.......

Chris

One thing, You got yor hands on some very pretty wood and will make some very special pens since it seems to be very rare. Nice job on the pen by the way. No one would blame you for hanging onto those blanks.

Thanks, Lou. I wonder why that didn't come up when I did the Google search?

Jim...it's the Jr. Gentlemen's rollerball made for CSUSA. I got it from Bill at Arizona Silhouette. The finish is Enduro Poly.
