Yesterday I sold 6 pens over a 5 hour time frame at the Chattanooga Market. All kinds of people stopping by and giving great compliments. Would you guys consider that a good, average or poor day? BTW pens sold were an Art Deco Rollerball (Amboyna Burl), Tycoon Fountain (Buckeye Burl), Tycoon Rollerball (B&W Ebony), Big Ben (Maple Burl), Big Ben (B&W Ebony), and a Gatsby Burlesque ( 11 types of wood scraps slapped together to form a blank). Thanks for the input.

I look at in sales per hour that a show is open.
$100 per hour = don't return next year
$200 per hour = good money
$300 per hour = don't tell anyone

One and two day shows tend to be more sales per hour. If you didn't have to spend a couple hundred dollars for travel gas, no hotel expense, not a long set up and tear down time, not a major entry fee, nothing stolen or broken; you had a good show.

An average day would cover your costs for doing the event.
A good day is anything above costs.
My last show was a one day, 10 hour show, high traffic. Sold 15+ pens from low end to high end. This one covered all expenses plus some.

John, you seem very happy and enjoyed yourself. That is a great accomplishment in this heat. Can't tell you if it was good or poor as you did not say what it cost you to set up and how much you made. (even though it is not any of our business) So to me with the excitement in your post I would say it was a good day.

John,as Mike said it's a good day if your happy, for some here that's a great day for others a disappointing day, it's all in your particular point of view.

John,
I know the Chattanooga market place from a couple of years back... you had a good day... sales there were always a little light in my opinion... main reason I stopped going... I used to do the Knoxville Market on Saturday, then to Chattanooga on Sunday... got to be a tough haul and not enough return. Congrats on a good day.

Thank you, all, for your responses. I did have a fun day, and I did make a small profit. Going again this Sunday.

Sometimes you have to build up a certain confidence in the folk by being there on a regular basis ,so that you don't appear to be a fly by nighter ! and folks get to know you and trust in what you do, times are a little tough all round so as long as you enjoy the experience and don't lose money on the day then alls good, if I sell 10 pens in a day then I am very happy :) that's usually well over $ 400 ,my rent is about 35 dollars and fuel about 20. Not too bad for a hobby :) Cheers ~ John

I dont know if you are already doing something like this or not. i just ordered it but have not used it yet. www.squareup.com. it allows you to take credit cards on your cell phone. it only costs if you use it (2.5%) so there are no monthly fees. a friend of mine that sells pottery at craft shows said it nearly doubled her business by being able to take credit cards on the spot.

Jim,
This past weekend was my first time using the Square. Three customers used credit (the others cash), but I agree, if I didn't have it, I probably would have lost the sales. Neat product.
