We haven't left the house in years on New years eve and haven't been to the movies in 31 years. The last movie we saw at a movie house was "The deer hunter" in 1979.
Tonight we went and saw the 2010 remake of "True Grit", nobody had told me to take a second mortgage out for tickets:wink:. Really enjoyed that 14 year old girls and Jeff Bridges acting, both gave award winning performances.

Yep, my wife drug me to dinner and a movie with two other couples. Last movie I went to was "Behind Enemy Line" and that was because my son does most of the flying of the F18s in the beginning of the movie. There were actually three pilots.

We went see the new Focker movie tonight. It was pretty good. People have told me the new "True Grit" is actually better than the John Wayne one. I'll see it when it is on TV. I'd rather watch my movies at home with a pause button in my hand.

Came home and watched the New York Symphony on PBS. They did the music from the second scene of "The Nutcracker" It was awesome.

Hope all had a great New Years eve and Happy New Year.

For what the movies cost now, I'd rather wait and watch at home on "demand" (or buy the DVD for the same price).
Also, at the price of the tickets, I'd hate feeling like I wasted my money if the movie wasn't what I was expecting.
We watched Inception on demand last night. I followed it close enough to know the plot, but I'll have to see it a few more times to really understand it.
 
LOML and I were going to do a movie and Chinese for Christmas... our yearly tradition since we don't have family up here... this year, we had 6 inches of snow on Christmas day so we postponed to New Years.... then decided to postpone until our truck driver son buys the movie... he always buys new DVD's on all the movies he likes and he's said he'll get this one too.... won't be but a couple of more months.. we'll put the money we would have spent on the movie towards a new sofa... probably will pay at least 10% of the cost of the sofa.
 
Wow..that's a long time to not go to a theater. You know, when Deer Hunter came out, I was 7 yrs old! I like going to see a movie, but don't do it often. I know it's expensive, but the main reason we don't usually go is because the theater seats are too cramped to sit for 2 hrs. I have a hard enough time sitting still for 10 minutes as it is.
 
My wife and I went to our last movie a couple of years ago. As you say, the ticket prices were a 'heart breaker', the cost of the crap from concession was mind boggling, and we had to sit and watch a half hour of advertising. When the movie started -- can't even remember what it was -- the sound was so loud that I had to chew up some paper napkin and shove it in my ears (which disgusted my wife to no end for a few minutes, until she decided to do it, too...). People talked all around us, continuously got up and left their seats, babies cried, cell phones went off, etc.

When it was over, we decided that from here in, it's pay-per-view ($6 for fairly current HD movies), buy the DVD, or rentals.

You can tell I'm getting old and grouchy.... :)
 
I'm a "DUKE" fan and I had second thoughts when my wife dragged me to this movie.

First off, movie theaters have changed considerably since my last visit. We went to the V.I.P. level, and the nice little guy kept bringing me cold adult beverages and free popcorn during the movie. The food was good, too! Who would have though, real, GOOD free food at the movies? The fold out leather rocking chair was more comfortable than my Lazy Boy at home.

My ticket, food and refreshments were FREE (I don't really know exactly what it cost, there HAS to be a catch to the VIP thing, but I didn't ask, and LOML didn't volunteer any info).

Beau Bridges was VERY GOOD, but there is only ONE DUKE! Matt Damon was considerably BETTER than Glenn Campbell in his role, and the un-named kid was considerably better than Kim Darby. I loved the "church music" and the cinematography was considerably better than the original. I thought the "proper english" was a little "hokie" in the begining, but before the movie ended, I really liked it. I still couldn't bear the "dead horse" scene.

Had I known that going to the movies was FREE (i'm still afraid to ask how much free, really costs), I'd have gone long ago.

An excellent movie and well worth the trip. I think the best thing about the VIP room is NO KIDS and free food.

Nope! Didn't spell it wrong, I got the WRONG Seahunt Kid:). I do the same thing with the Quaid brothers.

I love Lloyd, Beau and Jeff. Great actors and IMHO, the kids are in too few movies.
 
I loved "The Fabulous Baker Boys" which had both of Lloyd's sons. Hell, they made the female lead (Michelle Phfier, I think) look good and she couldn't act one bit.

I have to agree, if I lose the loyalty to John Wayne, JEFF did one hell of a job in this movie.

P.S. GO GATORS!!!!!
 
The last theatre movie that the Wife & I saw was the Sting with Steve McQueen in about 1974. For the last few years we have access to all the new movies and prefer to watch them at home - no one talking and the popcorn and drinks are allot cheaper. We will likely watch Inception and Salt within the next couple of weeks with the new True Grit and The Tourist to follow.
 
I don't want to start a big argument here like the kiwi verses Reconnaissance Wax, and trust me John Wayne was a great man, I loved his movies and saw every, I mean every movie he was in, but he couldn't really act. He played one part super and he played that part in every movie he stared in. They change the clothes and scenery but he played the same part in every movie. Just my opinion, now I will sit back and watch the controversy :rolleyes::biggrin:. And really, how much is a movie? Cost me $7.50 per ticket. How much is a football or other sports event? That is costing BIG money anymore. The only problem with going to the movies, is it is a pain to get up and got to the bathroom, and at my age that is often. That is what keeps me watching movies at home.
 
The Duke was Elvis, with a big hat and a six shooter! They didn't HAVE to act! For goodness sake, you are talking about John Wayne and Elvis!

They were America! Those two guys represented everything GOOD about this country! IMHO, this country would be in a lot better shape if the Duke and Elvis were still watching over us:)

And FWIW, I gave up my season UGA tickets when they went to $5, 000 a pair.

He actually played about 4 roles, the Colonel, the Marshal, the Marine and the Gunfighter (some movies combined more than one role into one character). His later roles in True Grit, Rooster Cogburn and The Shootist were probably his best roles. Stage Coach was remad.e at least twice and the Duke's version was the best of the 3. He also packed the theaters with every new movie ... he was the top box office actor for years and years.
 
I have about forty John Wayne VCR tapes. If anyone wants to put a bid on them, they can have them. They were taped by my in-laws but we aren't really fans enough to want to watch them or convert them to DVD.
